Terroir
Tarcal – Terézia Vineyard
The soil consists of an optimal combination of loess and brown forest soil, resting on rhyolite bedrock with a perlite cone beneath. Traces of lime are also present in the area. On the upper parts of the hill, erosion has removed much of the topsoil, exposing the perlite, which continues to fragment during cultivation. The diversity of soils and rock types contributes to the vineyard’s pronounced and complex minerality.
Vineyard
The vineyards were replanted between 2005 and 2010, using modern viticultural methods with 2 m row spacing and 0.8 m between vines. Spur pruning with two buds is applied, and yields are limited to 1.5 kg per vine. All vineyards have been farmed organically since 2009.
Vintage
The 2023 vintage was marked by a cool and unpredictable spring, resulting in budbreak a few days later than average. After flowering, the summer was characterised by unsettled and extremely humid conditions, presenting challenges for vineyard management. Occasionally unusually cool early mornings slowed the ripening process. In autumn, a record-warm Indian summer set in, followed by heavy rainfall at the end of the month. The humid conditions encouraged early and widespread botrytis, enabling the production of a significant quantity of sweet wines in this vintage.
Harvest
In October, perfectly ripe and healthy grape bunches were harvested to produce the estate’s dry, organic Hárslevelű.
