The Tokaji Szamorodni 2022 from Gróf Degenfeld is an expressive sweet wine shaped by the region’s long-held tradition of noble rot. The grapes originate from two distinguished sites: the Terézia vineyard in Tarcal, where loess and brown forest soil rest upon rhyolite and a perlite cone, and the Galambos vineyard in Mezőzombor, characterized by brown forest soil with loess patches and a subsoil of rhyolite and rhyolite tuff.
The vineyards were replanted between 1999 and 2002, using modern row spacing and two-bud spur pruning, yielding approximately 1.5 kg per vine. All parcels have been cultivated organically since 2009.
Following a relatively dry winter and a moderately rainy spring, the 2022 season continued with a dry, hot summer marked by several heat waves. Thanks to their deep root systems, the vines remained resilient and showed limited drought stress. Acidity levels stayed surprisingly stable—likely the result of reduced cluster weight and higher fruit concentration.
In October, heavily botrytised bunches were harvested by hand. Whole clusters were processed in a pneumatic press, fermented with selected yeast in stainless steel, and matured for eight months in 500-liter Hungarian oak barrels.
In the glass, the wine displays a bright straw yellow hue. The nose offers layered aromas of lychee, pear, and ripe apricot. On the palate, quince and pear notes lead the profile, supported by lively acidity and a subtle barrel-aged finish.
A wonderful pairing for aged cheeses and spicy Asian dishes, though it also works beautifully as an aperitif or enjoyed on its own. Ideal serving temperature: 9–10 °C.
