Entdeckung des Weinguts Kristinus: Eine Reise in die biodynamische Weinherstellung

Discovering Kristinus Winery: A Journey into Biodynamic Winemaking

Located in Kéthely, this winery exemplifies sustainable and biodynamic winemaking. The excitement was palpable as we arrived from different directions, reinforcing our sense of unity and shared purpose.

Kristinus Winery is nestled in the heart of the picturesque Balatonboglár wine region. The region's unique geographical features and climate create the perfect conditions for grape cultivation. The landscape is characterized by rolling hills, diverse soil types, and a favorable microclimate, ideal for viticulture.

Before our visit, we had learned about Kristinus Winery's commitment to biodynamic principles. The estate holds Demeter certification, a testament to its dedication to holistic and sustainable farming practices. This certification ensures that the winery maintains high standards in biodiversity, soil health, and ecological balance.

As we approached the modern-looking building at the heart of the estate, we were greeted with warm smiles. Our host, László Dober, the vineyard and farm manager, welcomed us and began our tour. He explained the innovative techniques they use, such as clay amphorae for fermenting the grapes, which impart unique characteristics to the wine. Unlike the traditional image of cellars filled with oak barrels, Kristinus employs a mix of amphorae, tonneau barrels, stainless steel tanks, and conventional barrels, each contributing to the wine's complexity.

During the tour, we were joined by Florian Zaruba, the estate director and winemaker. Listening to László and Florian talk about the winemaking process, their expertise and passion were evident. They spoke of the care and precision involved in every step, from vineyard management to the final bottling.

One of the highlights was the vineyard itself, with lush, vibrant vines surrounded by blooming flowers and the sounds of nature. This serene environment reflects the winery's philosophy of harmony with nature. The estate also has herb and spice gardens, contributing to the biodiversity and health of the vineyards.

Back at the main building, we enjoyed a tasting session featuring several wines. The first standout was Liquid Sunshine, an orange wine with deep hues and minimal intervention. Made from handpicked Chardonnay grapes, it underwent 24 days of skin contact in amphorae before being blended with Pinot Gris orange wine and bottled without filtration. The result is a captivating wine with notes of tea, peach, and white flowers.

Another exceptional wine was the Holistic Kékfrankos. This ruby-red wine offered a complex bouquet of sweet aromas, floral and herbal notes, fresh plum, cherry, violet, and lavender, with a subtle saltiness and earthy undertones. On the palate, it displayed a fine tannin structure, silky texture, and lively acidity, making it an excellent choice with dishes like paprika chicken, aged cheeses, or as a chilled conversation partner.

Our visit to Kristinus Winery was more than just a tour; it was an immersion into the world of biodynamic winemaking. The combination of innovative techniques, respect for nature, and the unique terroir results in wines that are both exceptional and enjoyable. Kristinus Winery has become one of my favorite places in Hungary, offering not only outstanding wines but also a deeper connection to the land and its stories.

For those looking to explore this special place, I highly recommend a visit or at least opening a bottle of Kristinus wine to experience the magic yourself.
